Apprentice carpenters work under the supervision of carpenters. They assist constructing, erecting, finishing and repairing metal and wooden structures on both commercial and residential buildings.
Apprentice carpenters perform a wide variety of tasks, among which are constructing formwork where concrete is poured and building wall frameworks, floors and roofs. Constructing and setting up units such as houses and cottages may also be among the responsibilities of apprentice carpenters. Apprentice carpenters may also be tasked with installing various fixtures such as hardware, flooring underlay, insulating material, locks and door handles. Cutting materials using power tools and hand tools as well as maintaining and sharpening these tools are all part of the job of apprentice carpenters.
Apprentice carpenters can choose to seek employment with building and construction companies, small firms that do contract building work and group training companies. They may also work as subcontractors. Apprentice carpenters are also employed on construction and civil engineering projects and housing estates. Most often, apprentice carpenters are asked to work on building sites and may also have to work at heights. Employment opportunities are generally good for those who want to become apprentice carpenters because carpentry is a large occupation with many projects nationwide.
The kind of training required for apprentice carpenters are mostly provided on the job. In case apprentice carpenters want to get off-the-job training, they can do so through registered training organisations such as Technical and Further Education (TAFE). Employers of apprentice carpenters have varying requirements, but they typically require apprentice carpenters to have completed at least Year 10.
Those who want to be successful apprentice carpenters must be able to work well with their hands and enjoy doing practical work. Apprentice carpenters also need to have a good sense of balance and be able to work at heights. They should also have good aptitude in math. Those who work as apprentice carpenters should have good interpersonal and communication skills because this job requires them to work as part of a team. It's also important for apprentice carpenters to know how to follow directions accurately.
